Choosing the Right SUP Board Size

The ideal size of a SUP board mainly depends on the paddler's weight. The heavier the paddler, the larger the SUP board should be.

Types of SUP Boards

There are different types of Stand Up Paddle Boards. You can choose between inflatable SUPs – actually called iSUPs (short for “inflatable SUP”) – and hardboards, which are not inflatable. You can also choose between Allround SUP boards, Touring SUP boards, or Racing SUP boards.

SUP Board Accessories

The board alone is not enough for stand-up paddling. At the very least, you’ll also need a SUP paddle. There are also many other useful accessories available for SUPing.

SUP Paddle

Paddles are made from different materials such as aluminum, carbon-fiberglass blends, or full carbon fibers.

Aluminum

Most SUP paddles are made of aluminum because it’s a lightweight metal that makes paddling easier.

Carbon-Fiberglass Blend

Even lighter than aluminum paddles are those made of carbon and fiberglass blends. A label like “Carbon 45” indicates the percentage mix between the two materials (45% carbon and 55% fiberglass).

Carbon

If you prefer paddles made from 100% carbon fibers, look for the label “Carbon 100”. Carbon is the lightest and stiffest material for paddles.

Fin

Attaching a fin provides more balance and helps you paddle in a straight line.

Paddle Floater

Because aluminum paddles don’t float by themselves, a Paddle Floater is highly recommended.

SUP Pump

To inflate your SUP, a pump is necessary. Most sets include a manual piston pump. You can also opt for an electric SUP pump, but it’s not essential.

Life Vest

Wearing a life vest is always a good idea. In case of an accident or muscle cramp, it ensures your safety in the water.

Trolley for Transport

There are special SUP trolleys available to transport your inflated board easily.

Care, Use, and Transport Tips

  • Dry your board and remove all air before rolling it up.
  • Store your SUP in a dry, shaded place away from direct sunlight.
  • After using it in the sea, rinse with fresh water to remove salt.
  • Avoid obstacles like rocks or sharp branches while paddling.
  • Protect the board during transport using a bag, film, or cover.
